The Lifeless Poem
- Submitted by D.B. on Wed, 06/03/2009 - 20:55
I went out and bought things,
they couldn't take your place.
I made myself so busy,
but couldn't keep the pace.
I ate 'til I was stuffed,
but still, I felt so empty.
I knew times would be tough,
but wasn't expecting so many.
How slowly time ticks by,
as I wait for mine to come.
How gracefully birds fly,
I wish that I was one.
I anticipate each night,
for you to visit in dreams.
Then I wake to the light,
a viscious world it seems.
I do all of these things,
but they don't bring you home.
I write down all these words,
but they're just a lifeless poem.
A lot with a little
D.B.,
Thank you for your submission. This poem does a lot in a short amount of time, which is definitely a strength. I really like the last sentence. In a short space, and with few words, the poem tells a long and painful story. There is loss and coping, then we are left feeling the narrator's sense of defeat. Well done.
I hope to read more of your work in the future,
l.d.
